A Welcoming Community of ‘Chicks’
Article by Alex Cotleur
In an era where technology often isolates us—working from home, interacting on social media platforms and texting instead of making phone calls—Liza Sandoval recognized a need for real, in-person community. This realization led her to found “Chicks ‘n’ Paddling Sticks,” a women-only paddling group. Recently, I joined seventeen “Chicks” for a picnic paddle and had the opportunity to speak with Liza. The group was as diverse as the paddle vessels present and skill levels varied too, from experienced paddlers and kayakers to a paddleboard novice, highlighting the inclusive nature of the group.

Chicks ‘n’ Paddling Sticks started as a simple idea born from necessity. Liza owned a heavy kayak that was nearly impossible to transport to various co-ed paddling events. She lived across from a beautiful little cove and decided to invite a few friends to join her there instead. What started with just a couple of gals quickly grew to five, then ten, and soon twenty. Realizing the demand for a women-only social paddling group, Liza created a Facebook group and named it “Chicks ‘n’ Paddling Sticks.” The idea took off rapidly and once the group reached 500 members, Liza’s husband encouraged her to purchase the domain and trademark the name to secure the unique concept. The name “Chicks” soon became synonymous with fun, friendship, and female empowerment through outdoor adventures.
Liza Sandoval started “Chicks,” which now offers over 20 different divisions, not just paddleboarding and kayaking.
For Liza, “Chicks” has been more than just a social group—it has been a lifeline. It carried her through one of the biggest heartbreaks of her life, helping her focus on others rather than her own sorrow. The supportive women in the group and the activities that kept her engaged played a significant role in overcoming personal challenges. For Liza, being on the water—or just seeing it—has always been soothing, bringing peace, joy, and a sense of freedom. This experience is the Blue Mind theory mentioned in previous articles.
As the group continued to grow, it became evident that members shared interests beyond paddling. To cater to this diversity, Liza introduced other divisions, including pickleball, bicycling, dance exercise, gun safety and target shooting, diving, fishing, golf, camping, hiking, yoga, international travel, skiing, and more. Today, “Chicks” offers over twenty different divisions to its members, accommodating both active events and more relaxed social opportunities. There are also less strenuous options like book club, arts and crafts, movie and theatre outings, and community service initiatives, allowing women of all ages and abilities to find their place in the community.
Chicks ‘n’ Paddling Sticks is more than just a paddling group—it’s a vibrant, supportive community where women come together to share their love for the outdoors, make new friends, and explore new hobbies. It’s a safe space where women can thrive, connect, and feel empowered. Whether you’re seeking adventure, fitness, creativity, or community involvement, there’s a place for you in “Chicks.” Becoming a member is simple—just get a referral from one of the three thousand current members and answer three questions on the Facebook page. Step into this amazing community and let’s paddle!
